Jana Winderen is a sound artist working in Oslo, Norwary. Although educated in Fine Art at Goldsmiths College in London, Winderen has a background in mathematics, chemistry and fish ecology from the University in Oslo. Combining these disciplines, Winderen researches the hidden depths and revealed the complexity of strangeness of the unseen world underwater. Using the latest technology, she is concerned with finding and reveals sounds from hidden sources, both inaudible for the human senses and sounds from places and creatures difficult to access. Amongst her activities are immersive multi-channel installations and concerts along with performances all over the world.
Winderen has had an installation in Park Avenue Tunnel, New York City in 2014, and was recently awarded an artist-in-residence at the TBA21 Academy in 2013. In 2011 she won the Golden Nica, Ars Electronica, for Digital Musics & Sound Art; Recent sounds work include Pasvikdalen, commissioned by Sonic Act, (Amsterdam, 2015); Dive commissioned by New York Department of Transportation for Park Avenue Tunnel (New York, 2014); Out of Range commissioned by Deutschlandradio, Kultur, (Germany, 2014); Ultrafield commissioned by MoMA, The Museum of Modern Art (New York, 2013); Water Signal, commissioned by The Guggenheim Museum and the Unsound festival in New York; ultraworld, a commission by Sound and Music for the listening room at BEOPEN, (London ,2012); Survivors of the Waterworld – Measuring Pollution by Sound, Gøteborg International Biennial for Contemporary Art (2011); Energy Field live at ARS Electronica Festival for receiving the Golden Nica in 2011; Between Dry Land, Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary (Istanbul, 2010).
Recent releases include Out of Range (2014); Debris (2012); Energy Field (2010); Heated: Live in Japan”(2009) the audio cassette The Noisiest Guys on the Planet (2009); the USB stick, Ants; the digital download Submerged (2009), the 7” vinyl Surface Runoff (2008).
She is currently participating in the project T-BA21 Academy with the project Silencing of the reefs supported by Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary, working on a full length release for Touch (UK) and currently working on a commission from the American Embassy in Oslo called Raft of Ice
